Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome or 4S is an intense and immediate emotional and physiological reaction (possibly rage, frustration, sadness, or panic) upon hearing certain sounds - most prominently noises associated with oral functions such as eating, breathing, chewing or other noises such as typing sounds or pencils scratching.
This website was developed through the concerted teamwork of people who joined together in an online community in order to share our current knowledge base, to help gather more information and data, and to offer support to individuals with 4S, their families and friends. It is our hope that as our community grows, fewer people will be left to think they are alone in as they deal with this little known and poorly understood condition, and that research will ultimately provide us with effective treatment options.

Please Note: There has been very little medical or scientific research done on this condition, and much of the content of this website is drawn from the personal and often subjective (yet very real) anecdotal experiences of 4S sufferers who have chosen to share their stories with us. While there have been diligent efforts to raise awareness of 4S within the medical and scientific communities and agencies such as the NIH, at this time there is, sadly, little scientifically validated information to report. Site visitors should bear the subjective and anecdotal character of this information posted here in mind as they peruse it. |
